If you’re a victim of fraud, quickly gather any evidence (text messages, documentation) and follow these initial steps:

  • Immediately call the Fraud Department of your bank, credit card, and investment advisor.

  • Immediately report it to local police department or sheriff.

  • Immediately file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), the federal government’s national internet crime database: ic3.gov

  • Contact the four main credit bureaus and if not done already, immediately freeze your credit.

  • Each California County has an Adult Protective Services (APS) agency to help elder adults (60 years and older) and dependent adults (18-59 who are disabled) to report fraud or exploitation: cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/adult-protective-services

  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report and recover from identity theft: identifytheft.gov

  • State of CA Regulatory Agency: Submit a Complaint if having to do with financial products or products, licenses with the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) : 866-275-2677 or dfpi.ca.gov
